Unit 1 Overview: (21 instructional days)
Unit 1 will introduce the students to the play and the novel study. The unit will consist of a variety of texts including poems, short stories, media, and films. Unit 1 will focus on general outcomes 1 and 2 where students will begin to discover possibilities, extend awareness, construct meaning from text and context, understand and appreciate textual forms, elements and techniques, and respond to a variety of print and non-print texts.
Assessment
Formative:
In Unit 1 formative assessment will occur as the students complete comprehension questions related to the texts and in-class discussions related to the texts. Practice essays, collaborative writing, and multimedia will also be included.
The students will complete a practice Visual Reflection (VR) essay in Unit 1

Unit two will continue to address outcomes 1 and 2 while introducing outcome 3 where students will determine inquiry or research elements, and follow a plan of inquiry.
