High Prairie School Division's student-grown lettuce is now available at Freson Bros. High Prairie as Always Growing, HPSD's vertical farm, heads into its second year of operation.
The vertical farm allows E.W. Pratt High School students to complete dual credit courses in partnership with Olds College, microcredential courses in agriculture, and work experience.
Approximately half of the lettuce produced is donated to the High Prairie & District Food Bank Society, as an important part of this project has always been to engage and support community.
Lettuce is sold to HPSD schools at a reduced rate to support hot lunch programs, salad bars, home economics labs, and breakfast and nutrition programs (wraps). Any revenue generated through lettuce sales is reinvested into the farm to offset operating costs.
Always Growing lettuce is currently available in two retail stores: High Prairie Wholesale Market and Freson Bros. High Prairie. Customers can also order online at alwaysgrowing.ca, with pickup available at Marigold Enterprises in High Prairie.
As Always Growing enters its second year, the farm continues to bring together student learning, locally grown food, and community support – from the classroom and vertical farm at E.W. Pratt High School to school meal programs, the local food bank, and grocery shelves throughout High Prairie.
